At the airport in Japan, the former princess and her husband were also escorted onto the plane by police and airport staff.

The couple will start a new life in New York, where Kei Komuro works as a law clerk at a law firm after graduating from Fordham University law school.

Komuro was recently announced to have failed the bar exam held by the New York Board of Law Examiners in July.

According to a Japanese magazine, Komuro’s failure means the newlyweds will make ends meet based on an annual salary of about $52,000, instead of earning $192,000 if Komuro passes.

Previously, Japanese media reported that Komuro would likely return to the US first to work at a law firm.

However, Komuro’s stay in Japan was extended after Professor Tatsuhiko Kawashima, father of Crown Princess Kiko and grandfather of former Princess Mako, passed away last weekend.

After a simple wedding with a press conference at the hotel on October 26, Mako left the royal residence.

Mako decided to give up her royal title to marry her commoner boyfriend Kei Komuro after many ups and downs.

Immediately after the Japanese Imperial Household Agency submitted legal procedures to register their marriage on behalf of Princess Mako and Kei Komuro, Mako officially became a commoner.

The Japanese royal family has called for former Princess Mako’s privacy to be respected after her marriage, as she is now just an ordinary citizen.

At the press conference after the wedding, when asked about her future expectations, Mako said she wanted to `live peacefully` from now on.
